Heʻeia National Estuarine Research Reserve was recently featured on HI Now in a three-part segment highlighting ʻāina-based education, community stewardship, and collaborative research in Heʻeia . Heʻeia NERR Education Coordinator, Fred Reppun, shared about the community-driven establishment of the Heʻeia NERR and how hands-on learning and mālama ʻāina promotes deeper connections for teachers and students to place. He’eia NERR Research Coordinator, Shimi Rii, shared about how research is conducted with a place-based approach, grounded in local priorities and with community partners to answer questions to inform stewardship and management. The feature showcased how combining science with place-based knowledge and stewardship provides valuable information to support the restoration and resilience of Heʻeia’s streams, wetlands, fishponds, and coral reefs.
